The incision is made along the natural fold of the upper eyelid and, if needed, below the eyelashes in the lower eyelid, where scars are least visible. The surgery is individualized for each patient's needs, skin type and goals, and the plan is made during your consultation with Dr. Zakhary in her Calgary office.

The excess skin, muscle and/or fat are then removed. The surgery usually takes between 2 to 3 hours, depending on the specific amount of work needed. Sutures are removed about 1 week after your surgery, and follow-up appointments are arranged.

As with any cosmetic surgery, there are some risks with this procedure. During your consultation, Dr. Zakhary will fully discuss these with you.

Immediately after surgery, you may experience itching, dry eyes, tearing, drooping eyelids, swelling or bleeding. Dr. Zakhary will prescribe medications to keep you safe and comfortable during recovery.

Do not be alarmed if tiny pimples (called Milia) appear along the scar line. These usually disappear within a few days.

Blepharoplasty is performed on the eyelid—never on the eye itself. Visual impairment is an extremely rare possibility.

If you have low brows, Dr. Zakhary can correct this at the same time as your eyelid lift surgery to improve your overall result.

Crow's feet and fine lines under the eyes will improve after blepharoplasty, but they will not fully disappear. These wrinkles can be treated with medical skin care treatments before or after surgery.

On average, you can return to work and be socially presentable 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.

Your results will continue improving for at least six months after the procedure.

You will look 5 to 8 years younger following blepharoplasty eyelid surgery — and you will maintain this age difference permanently.
