Ear Lobe Repair – Otoplasty FAQ’s
EarLobe Repair
Split ear lobes or long ear lobe piercings usually occur as the result of the weight of heavy earrings on pierced ears, stretchers or expanders that are used to enlarge earlobe piercings, or they may be caused by accidental trauma, such as an earring being pulled from your ear.
Keloid scars of earlobes are lumpy and large scars that can occur after ear piercings, particularly on the back surface of the top of the ears. Dr. Zakhary can remove a Keloid scar, and then maintains close follow up with you in order to monitor your healing and prevent the Keloid scar from recurring.
Earlobe rejuvenation surgery hides one of the telltale signs of trauma or aging, and also has functional value since it allows your earrings to sit properly in your earlobe, rather than drooping off your ears, and can reverse the look of stretched ear piercings, which may no longer be appropriate for you.
Ear lobe repair or rejuvenation is usually a quick, painless and very rewarding procedure. Dr. Zakhary performs this surgery as an in-office procedure, under Local anesthesia. It takes about 1-2 hours depending on the situation, and on whether Dr. Zakhary will perform ear lobe repair one or both of your ears.
A torn ear lobe cannot be just sutured shut without removing a thin layer of skin, or else the scar will contract and shrink upwards over time, leading to a mis-shapen ear lobe. In order to prevent this, Dr. Zakhary removes a thin layer of skin from the edges of the earlobe piercing, and then the edges are carefully together with a special technique called a "z-plasty" to increase the chance that the earlobe contour will remain round, and to avoid an indentation where the scar lays. The scar will fade over time, and will eventually not be noticeable.
After earlobe repair surgery, the stitches are easily and painlessly removed in about five to seven days, and ears may safely be pierced again in about 6 to 8 weeks. Dr. Zakhary will be able to recommend a good ear piercing location in Calgary, Alberta for you to re-pierce your ears at the appropriate time.
If you have sagging or elongated large earlobes, which usually comes with age, a Dr. Zakhary can also shorten the earlobe using a similar technique, in her office in Calgary, under local anesthesia.
Fillers can also be used to add volume to a deflated earlobe and to correct earlobe wrinkles for months to years.
The goal of earlobe rejuvenation is to create earlobes that have a more normal shape and size, which are in harmony with the rest of your facial features.
