Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) corrects the hooding, bulges and wrinkles around your eyes, resulting in a more rested and youthful appearance. It may also relieve your eyes from the extra weight of excess skin, muscle or fat, leading to a youthful appearance, and less eye fatigue.
Eyelid surgery can also be performed on younger individuals to improve hereditary heavy eyelids. Dr Zakhary performs eyelid surgery under local anesthesia or sedation anesthesia, in a fully accredited surgical facility in Calgary, Alberta.
The incision is made along the natural fold of the upper eyelid and, if needed, below the eyelashes in the lower eyelid, where scars are least visible. The surgery is individualized for each patient's needs, skin type and goals, as with most cosmetic surgery procedures, and the plan is made during your consultation with Dr. Zakhary in her office in Calgary. The excess skin, muscle and/or fat are then removed. The surgery usually takes between 2 to 3 hours, and this depends on the specific amount of work that needs to be performed during your surgery. The sutures are removed approximately 1 week after your surgery, and follow up appointments are made.
As with any cosmetic surgery, there are some risks with this procedure. During your consultation, Dr. Zakhary in her Calgary office, will fully discuss this with you in detail. Immediately following your blepharoplasty surgery, you may experience some itching, dry eyes, eye tearing, drooping eyelids, swelling or bleeding. Dr. Zakhary will prescribe medications to help keep you very comfortable and safe during your recovery.
Do not be alarmed if you develop tiny pimples along the scar line. These tiny pimples are called Milia and they usually disappear a few days after surgery.
Blepharoplasty or Eyelid lift surgery is carried out on the eyelid, and not on the eye itself. This is why visual impairment is only a very remote and rare possibility.
If you have low brows, Dr. Zakhary can correct this for you at the same time as your eyelid lift surgery to improve your overall result.
The crow's feet wrinkles at the outer corner of your eyes, and the fine lines under your lower eyelids will be improved after blepharoplasty surgery, but they will not totally disappear. It is very important to have realistic expectations about what the result of your eyelid lift, or Blepharoplasty surgery, can do for you. These wrinkles can be improved with special medical skin care treatments before or after your surgery.
On average, you can be socially presentable and can return to work 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. Your eyelid result will continue to improve for at least six months after surgery. You will look 5 to 8 years younger following blepharoplasty eyelid surgery.... and you will keep this age difference forever.
